Tucker's Hot Take: Omen SuperMarine

The SuperMarine is a mid-length board, meaning it is slightly longer, narrower, and thinner than typical boards of the same volume. This shape improves glide, early planing, and efficiency, especially in light wind conditions. Tucker emphasizes that volume isn’t the only important factor—length plays a significant role in reducing drag and increasing speed before takeoff. He suggests that for most riders, choosing a board with volume close to their body weight in kilograms is a solid guideline, but the SuperMarine’s design allows riders to size down from traditional wing boards due to its superior efficiency.

Credit for the SuperMarine concept goes to MACkite's Tucker Vantol. Tucker identified a growing category of wingers who lacked the local conditions or hadn't yet developed the skill for the 84L Flux to support their progression.

Coming to us with a concept for a new board and some rough dimensions we agreed there was a gap to be addressed. The problem definition with the SuperMarine became creating a board that would provide the same progression boost to early intermediate wingers that the Flux has become known for with intermediate - advanced riders.

We worked with Tucker on a few variations and were able to leverage the CFD technology we'd been refining with the Emissary boards to create something we're very excited to share. The SuperMarine's hull provides significantly more stability than anything in the Flux or Emissary range while maintaining outstanding efficiency and touchdown recovery. This confidence inspiring yet surprisingly nimble platform will have you mastering your gybes, tacks, and waveriding your crew will be wondering what other new "gear" you're on.

While easier maneuvers is a great feature, the single most important thing to accelerate wing progression is to constantly be pushing the threshold of your abilities. If you're hesitant to fall, knowing it will be a struggle to get back on foil, you simply won't be playing with your personal limits each session. For this reason, the SuperMarine being very easy to get on foil is the most important features to progression. You'll have fun pushing your personal limits each session, even when the wind is light.

Though the SuperMarine is generally intended as to be a winger's "second board", there has been a number of Omen riders expressing interest in the shape as a light wind option. While the larger Emissary boards and the 84L Flux are high performance wingboards with incredible low end performance, they are narrower and designed to be ridden at a relatively low volume/bodyweight ratio. Despite the excellent take off, due to their dimensions they lack the ability to "slog" in extremely low wind. The way to think about light wind riding with those boards is like a surfer waiting for a set, patiently scan the wind-line and stand by for a puff or "set" of wind to get on foil. The SuperMarine on the other hand, can be sailed in wind below that required to get on foil for those who prefer this approach or live in spots where slogging is useful.

Note that the tracks on the SuperMarine are placed further forward relative to our other boards. It is recommended to start with your foil near the rear of the tracks for the easiest fore/aft balancing during waterstarts. As your skills improve you can start inching the foil forward for more responsive turning and surfing performance along with an increasing requirement for dynamic balancing during taxiing.

For smaller board of similar performance attributes check out our Flux range. All sizes of SuperMarine come standard with strap inserts - a Y configuration up front with the option to offset wider and a row of centred inserts for your back foot.

What's Included:

  • deckpad factory installed
  • stainless steel T30 torx hardware for strap inserts in box
  • black G10 mini fin

Features:

  • Confidence inspiring - Rest assured that the features that provide the Flux its incredible smooth touchdown recovery have been carried over to the SuperMarine's hull, so when the wind starts cranking and the waves pick up you won’t be held back.
  • The shape of progression - The shape of the nose and rocker provide a forgiving surface to direct flow over the board during take offs and high speed touch downs, while the volume is minimized to improve turning response and pumping performance. While the SuperMarine's volume is concentrated underfoot there is ample left in the tail to provide stability and easier control during waterstarts. The chines are designed to provide consistent flow separation at various angle of yaw which improves handling turing takeoff and smooths out touch down recovery during turns.
  • The Perfect Fit - Zero-rocker through the standing area, a subtle concave, and a 5/8" recess to the deck provide a secure and locked in feeling. The width of the boards strike a sweet spot between providing enough balance for intermediate riders to be able to stand on the board with some practice while maintaining very low drag at foiling speeds.
  • Made in the EU - The SuperMarine is built to last. The Appletree factory in Portugal applies a full carbon layup over a CNC cut closed-cell foam core. Vacuum resin infusion technology is used to saturate the cloth and achieve the ideal fiber to resin ratio to optimize stiffness and durability. This process is what allows Appletree to create a permanent bond to their proprietary foam core, and uniquely results in a board that will not be damaged by water ingress - even if the outer skin is damaged. Along with their world renowned track reinforcing technology, the SuperMarine is a board you can rely on to maintain peak performance for years to come.
  • Low Drag Carry Handle - The SuperMarine includes a built in FCS II box and mini G10 fin. The fin functions as a streamlined and lightweight handle for those whose arms are not long enough to carry the 78L like a surfboard. This system allows the fin to be reversed, providing two handle positions which balance a wider range of foil mounting positions.
