Waydoo EVO eFoil Firmware Update | A Complete Step-by-Step Guide
From time to time your Waydoo EVO will have firmware updates available. It's important to install these since they'll contain bug fixes and add new features. MACkite's Eli has created a step-by-step guide to walk you through updating the various components of your Waydoo so you can have a fun, trouble-free experience out on the water.
Before You Begin...
Make sure you're all charged up. Your Waydoo battery, the controller, and your device with the Waydoo app should all be charged so that nothing shuts down in the middle of an update. At best, you'll have to start over, and if your controller's update is interrupted it could even brick it. So check your charge level or have it plugged in during the update.
Next, make sure you've got everything handy and assembled. You'll need your:
- Hydrofoil
- Propulsion Unit
- Mast
- Battery
- Board
- Remote
- Device with the Waydoo app installed (phone, tablet, etc.)
Finally, check that your remote and board are paired. If they don't automatically pair, you can manually pair them.
- Power on your remote, then your battery.
- On your remote, hold the Power and - buttons at the same time until the remote buzzes.
- The remote will scan for nearby boards.
- To select your board, pull the trigger and the controller will indicate that the paring was successful. You can confirm this by holding the - button to unlock it and giving the trigger a pull to run the motor.
Installing Updates
Connect to your Waydoo
Bring your device with the Waydoo app installed near your Waydoo EVO. Open your device's Settings and Wi-Fi connections. Look for your mast's Wi-Fi signal and connect to it. Usually it begins with 4F or 4W, followed by a series of numbers. The factory password is 12345678.
Once you're connected, open the Waydoo app. On the right side, tap the icon that looks like a dial, then choose "Flyer EVO" and "Confirm", then "Connect". Once you see the option to "Disconnect", you'll know you've successfully connected to your EVO. Tap anywhere on the screen to return to the main menu.
Find and Install Updates
Along the bottom of the screen, tap the icon for "Board". This will take you to a screen showing the various components of your Waydoo and which ones have an update available. (There won't always be an update for all the components.) Go ahead and tap "Update" to enter the screen where you can update each item that has an update ready.
Along with the option to update, you'll see some info including the currently installed version and the upgrade version, what the update will do, and some tips for updating.
Note: Don't let your device go to sleep during an update or it'll stop and disconnect from the Waydoo and you'll have to start over. Keep an eye on it.
The update progress bar does start and stop, but if it stalls out for more than a couple minutes, you can try exiting and re-entering the app. If you have another update in progress at the same time, be sure to wait for it to complete first or you'll have to start over with that one, too.
Sometimes after updating the mast or battery, the Wi-Fi signal will stop transmitting and you'll need to reconnect to it in your device's settings to do more updates. Be sure to close and re-open the Waydoo app if you need to do this.
Update Mast
Tap the "Update" button next to the Mast listing and it'll begin its update. Don't worry if it takes a moment to begin or pauses at 50 percent. Just be patient and it'll resume on its own. You may hear a beep when it resumes after 50 percent.
Once the update has uploaded to the mast, it'll install it. A screen will pop up to let you know to wait for a tone to complete before operating the board. Tap "Confirm".
You'll see a blue "Finish" in place of the "Update" button, but it's not a button. It's a display to let you know that it's now in the finishing stages of the update. You must wait for the beeping to stop to know when it's done.
Update GPS
The GPS update is usually pretty quick. Just tap "Update" like you did for the mast and wait. It shouldn't pause at 50 percent like the mast did.
Update Battery
The battery update will also go straight through without any long pauses at the halfway mark. As it finishes updating, the screen on your battery will turn off and power back on by itself. Be sure not to exit the app or let your device sleep until the battery's screen has turned back on.
Update Battery BMS
The Batter BMS is usually a smaller, faster update. As it's finishing, pay attention to your battery screen. It'll show that the BMS is updating, along with a percentage and a bar.
Update Remote
This update can take quite a while, so the remote is especially important to have fully charged or plugged in for the update since a failed update could result in making the remote unusable.
As the remote's update finishes, the remote will power down and then restart.
Wrapping Up
Everything should be updated now, but to double check that you haven't missed any updates, close your app and then re-open it. Tap the dial icon and select your EVO, confirm and connect, then tap the "Board" icon back at the main screen.
If you don't see any updates available for your EVO, congratulations! You are completely up-to-date and ready to go rip out on the water.
