Tuck Knee Indy to Blind or Wrapped
Tuck Knee Indy to Blind or Wrapped
The Indy Grab is the easiest of all the grabs in boardsports. You grab the board with your back hand on the top side edge between your feet. The Tuck Knee variation takes this basic and makes it look stylish. You can see the difference in the two photos here.
The Straight Leg Variation
The Tuck Knee Variation
I just did a simple tutorial on the Tuck Knee here. But the key is to first learn how to load your lines and pop with the kite at 45 degrees without sending it up. You use board speed and a quick upwind load to get tension in your lines. You then scoop and pop off the water with your back leg.
The Pop
Get your weight over the kiteboard and do a half-load. This is a pop mixed with an Ollie. Load the lines like you would for an air trick. Keep your weight over the board and Ollie out of the pop so you keep a horizontal axis.
The Grab
To get the grab you need to turn your back to the kite. This gets the center lines out of your way and sets you up for the grab. Bring your legs up into your chest, grab the board between your feet, and tuck that back knee down. At the same time, poke your front leg out as straight as possible. The straighter, the better it will look.
You can see that Chris and I are both doing this grab on a different axis. You can twist the board back like Chris is doing or you can stay straight for a more simple variation.
Poke the other way to build momentum for the spin
The Landing
To land blind or wrapped, you should poke your leg out in the opposite direction you want to spin. This helps orient you and it will give you the momentum needed to spin around to blind or wrapped.
To land, you won't be riding blind or wrapped too long. You'll be going mostly downwind either way you spin, so you will sink fast. If the kite is high, you can simply do a surface spin around your lines and ride away heelside. This is called the Olay. If the kite is low, you can pop back out the way you came.
Do do this, you'll have to do an Ollie riding blind. This is a bit more complicated and something you will have to practice a lot to get right. It's the same as a pop, but you are riding backwards and popping off the new back foot.
Ryan (Rygo) Goloversic
Many people dream of quitting their job, traveling the world and pursuing their passions. Rygo is one of those people who pulled the trigger. A few years into his career, he decided to change everything and travel as a kiteboarder, freelance videographer & writer. His mission is to share the stoke & help people put the boarding into their kiteboarding. Get outside and kite!
