Ride with Blake: How to Live on a Sailboat
In the second episode Blake gives us a glimpse into his life on a sailboat in Key West.
Kite dreams
Quit your job, move somewhere south. Pick up a sailboat and spend your days kiteboarding with friends. Live a care-free life. It sounds impossible, I know. I'm here to tell you it's not. Four years ago I moved to the Florida Keys. Since then I've lived in more than a few apartments and surfed a lot of couches, some nicer than others. Along the way, I've learned a lot about myself and made some unforgettable friends. I started working at Keys Cable for Matthew Sexton and eventually I made my way down to mile marker zero in Key West. This year, I heard about a sailboat for rent just off the hook. It turns out a dock slip for a dingy is as cheap as $87 a month! Who would have thought?!
Keeping it real
Now I'm not saying life is perfect, but I am living in the moment and you can't ask for much more then that. I work as a server on the beach, so it's not like I'm rolling in cash or anything. That said, when you remove the unnecessary and live on a budget its amazing how far a little will get you! Rather than settle down and worry about bills and obligations, I'm focused on what's important now. For the time being that is putting some serious time in on the water and exploring the unending beauty of this place. From epic sessions to chasing dolphins, there is so much to discover I don't even know where to start.
Why not give it a try
This lifestyle is certainly not for everybody, but if it has ever crossed your mind I would ask, "what's stopping you?" It could be as simple as living on a strict budget for a year. Save everything you can. Then take a year or two long hiatus. You could easily find part time work as a server and do well enough. And who knows, maybe you'll find there's no going back after living the good life. At the very least you'll have a great understanding of yourself and what's truly important in your life.
