Let’s Chat: What to Bring On Your Next Kiteboarding Vacation
What should you bring on your next big kiting trip? A checklist.
So, you've booked tickets to head toward warmer climates, have you? Or, haven't you? It's time to get that done, as it's travel season for many of us - we're here to help your upcoming trip go as smoothly as possible.
Here at MACkite, we don't just sit at our desks all day checking emails and answering phones - we actually leave the office with kite gear in tow and head south as well! After years and years of experience, we feel that traveling around with kiteboarding equipment is one egg we've cracked...or something like that.
I'm going to cover a list of equipment that I'd typically bring on any vacation where I get the chance to go kiteboarding. Certainly, everyone has their own needs, but I like to have all bases covered if I only get a short while to kite while on vacation.
What to considering bringing:
- Kites (we'll cover that in a minute)
- Boards (we'll also cover this one)
- Harness
- Pump (Is yours in good condition? If not, buy a new WMFG)
- Bars. Yes, bars. That's two. Bring a backup!
- Spare Parts
- Airtime DIY Repair Kit
- Strut Hose/Clamps
- Valve
- Fin Set (an extra if I'm bringing a surfboard)
- Leash
- Waterwear, dependent on the conditions of the area
- Changing Towel
- Sunscreen (the good stuff, too)
Can you think of anything I missed? This always happens, even when I make a list...
For kites and boards, it's totally dependent on the local conditions. I obviously won't be bringing my 17 if I'm heading to a very windy place, nor would I bring a 7 to a place that is known for light winds. I'll pay attention to the local forecast, or even try to drum up some local knowledge before the trip to make sure I'm properly equipped. As for boards, I like to travel light for the most part, so I won't bring my larger boards.
Having a good travel bag is almost at the top of the list. The last thing I want is to blow a seam and have my gear spill out all over the Miami airport (I've seen it happen...yes, I laughed initially). Use the Ion Crushbags or some sort of Compression Bag if you're tight on space. Make sure everything fits and meets your weight requirements. Yes, the "Golf Bag" thing still works - just go curbside and have a crisp $20 in your hands for the person at the desk.
Traveling for kiteboarding is what makes this sport just soooo sweet. Don't miss out this season - book those flights!
If you have any questions regarding where to go, what to do, or anything, please - don't hesitate to ask. We're here to help. We just require that you book an additional ticket for one of us to come along...
