Let's Chat: Nathan Choosing His 2016 Kiteboarding Wish List
Growing With Kiteboarding
It's time to get back into the water.
As we begin to approach the kiteboarding season here in the Midwest, I start to get excited about returning to the water. Yes - others have been kiteboarding for months now (Marc Hoeksema has over 25 sessions so far!) while I've yet to dip a toe into Lake Michigan. This is actually a first for me in years, not rushing to get back into the water as soon as the ice clears. I'm taking advantage of the mild weather with some of my other hobbies while the lake makes its slow climb back up to reasonable temperatures. However, as I said, I'm starting to get excited about getting back to the water.
One of the major contributing factors to my excitement is new equipment. Yes, even after years of flying the "latest and greatest" I still contract this Christmas morning-esque exuberance when I think about trying new gear. Here's my short list of things I need to try:
2016 North Mono - This newest bundle of joy focuses on bringing the art of light wind riding to a whole new level due to its low-end power. Foilboarding is also a breeze with the Mono, as is surfing in medium winds. Riders will quickly notice the Mono's freeriding and wave specialties as well as plenty of turning speed.
New Hydrofoils from Liquid Force, Slingshot, and Cabrinha - This year, Liquid Force has unleashed the Happy Foil Board and the Rocket Foil Board. Cabrinha released the Cabrinha Double Agent Foil, and Slingshot has unleashed a series of boards and masts including the Dwarfcraft Foil and Hover Glide mast.
2016 Slingshot RPM - The legend continues with the 2016 RPM: The renowned all-around weapon of choice for world champion tricksters, soul-searching surfers and casual weekend-warriors alike. Returning as the flagship kite on Slingshot’s legendary lineup, the 2016 RPM is loaded with exciting and innovative features that will again place this kite at the top of the food chain and uphold its reputation as one of the most versatile and rock solid kites ever produced.
2016 Liquid Force Elite (although I'm terrified of foil kites)
Ride Engine Wetsuits
There are certainly others on the list that will be tested, but I've been truly looking forward to getting back to the water to check out some of the new gear. Like anything else, new equipment is always exciting. If you've been on the same old kites and boards for the past few seasons, consider trying some of the latest toys.
I recently had a conversation with a customer where I attempted to address the age-old question, "what kite should I get?" After a thorough discussion regarding riding styles, wind speeds, quiver setup, and all of the other things to consider, I finished with one of my favorite statements that applies to nearly any hobby you may have: you need the kite that will make you excited about going kiteboarding. Often times, so many things can get in the way of enjoying a session. If you're excited about your equipment, then you'll be excited to get back to the water. If you truly enjoy kiteboarding, continue investing in your experience. Book that trip. Buy that new kite. If you're anything like me, you'll be pleased you did.
