Kitesurfing Toeside Transition with Style
What up guys. Today we're going to break down another half loaded pop video. We just covered the tail grab with Chris Bobryk. Next up, we're going cover one of the most stylish and easy grabs, the Tuck Knee Indy. It's a half loaded pop where you tuck your back knee and grab the board with your back hand between your feet on the toeside edge. Later we'll do a more advanced version with Chris where you take it to blind or wrapped.
This is a fun and easy one that can be used as a transition or fun filler between harder air tricks.
Step One - The Pop
To kick this off, this is a kite low, line tension trick. That means you won't be sending the kite. It will stay at 45 degrees the entire trick. Keep the kite at 45 and come in with medium speed. Come off your edge and ride downwind to pick up a little more speed. Lean back and carve upwind. Maintain good posture and stay locked at the hips.
Keep a little weight over the board for this one. As you carve upwind, push down with your back leg and bring your front leg up. This will pop you off the water. As you pop up, bring your back leg into your chest.
Come in with good speed and come off your edge just a little to pick up more speed. With your weight slightly over the board, you're going to lean back and carve slightly upwind to load the lines. Push down hard with your back leg and bring your front leg up. Personally, I like to add a small scoop to my pop. The kite will pop you off the water naturally from this motion.
Sheet in as you pop your kiteboard
Step Two -Turn your Back to the Kite
You can also sheet in as you pop, just like a sent jump. Depending on how powered you are or how high you want to go, you can sheet in as you pop and sheet out to control your height. I usually sheet a little right as I pop and let the bar out so I travel forward rather than up. You can just hold it and go big too.
As you leave the water, get small and keep your front hand on the bar. Rotate your body away from the kite. This will feel like you are riding toeside in the opposite direction, or the same as riding blind in the direction you are traveling.
Step Three - The Grab
Bring your legs up and tuck your knee into the board. From here the grab is super easy. If you do it right, you won't even have to reach. The board should be at hand level. Grab the board and poke your front leg as straight as possible. Hold the grab as long as possible, spot your landing, and ride downwind.
Landing Downwind is the Key to Kitesurfing Transitions
Step Four - The Transition
The key to using this as a transition is to turn your nose slightly back downwind and land. Once you touch down, you have the option of redirecting the kite as a normal transition, or doing a downloop for extra power. It's much easier than you think as you're not doing a jump transition while redirecting the kite in the air.
