Hooked in Back to Wrapped
The backroll is possibly the most popular trick in kiteboarding. It's usually the first move everyone learns. From there people progress to the back to toeside or the double backroll. The back to wrapped, however, is by far the most stylish and technical first variation where one can pair a roll with a flat rotation. Usually this trick is done by unhooked freestyle riders, but it can be done hooked in easily enough and will make you stand out on the water!
Step One - Kite Low
This is a recurring theme in our tutorials with Chris. Far too many riders focus on sent jumps, which are sick, but you'll be a more versatile rider and double your bag of tricks and style just by adding load and pop tricks to your kiteboarding repertoire. Leave the kite at a 45 degree angle and go fast. Load up like a normal backroll and pop hard off your back leg.
Step Two - Late Release
Try to do half a backroll before you even leave the water. Your back will be facing the water by the time you take off. This will huck you into the rotation.
Keep looking over your front shoulder and swing your hips up and around.
Step Three - Landing Wrapped
To land wrapped, you'll complete the backroll and be falling towards the water in the toeside position. To complete the rotation, swing your hips the extra 180 so you land on your heelside edge. The control bar will be wrapped behind you!
This is similar to blind with the main difference being that a blind landing is a toeside landing with the bar behind you while wrapped is a heelside landing with the bar behind your back.
Step Four - Unwrapping
To come out you have two options. One is to lean forward and simply let the lines swing over your head. This is called an Olé (pronounced "olay") and will naturally happen. If you keep riding downwind, you will simply sink.
If you land fast with power, you can do a small pop and rotate the other way to unwind. This looks epic but takes more skill.
