Our Learn 2 Ride package is designed with both learning and progression in mind. This package features the Cabrinha Contra, a kite that delivers a stable, fast kite that will appeal to beginner, intermediate, and advanced kiteboarders alike. The Contra has been a staple of our demo quiver the past several years. A lot of brands make light wind kites. Not every brand makes one that you're actually excited to ride though. With the Contra, Cabrinha did just that. A 3-strut platform, the Contra feels lively and playful for a light wind kite, and still packs a lot of low end grunt. Expanding the range with the introduction of a single strut Contra, we weren't sure how it would actually translate to session fun. This was put to rest immediately, the 1S Contra being an absolute ripper when paired with a twin tip.

We crafted this package to not only give the new kiter the tools for success, but gear that will allow them to continue to progress well after that first year. MAC's Take

Since its inception almost 20 years ago, the Contra has been an absolute machine for lightwind conditions. This naturally led to Cabrinha's designers looking at it for use with foiling, a super natural progression for the kite. The 1-strut iteration drops a lot of the weight that the 3-strut has, allowing for flight in much lighter conditions. Pair that with a quick response time and you've got an ultra foiling machine.

Kiteboard Options

< Liquid Force PKG

The base model in our packages is the PKG, or package, board. It's a basic compression-mold twintip by Liquid Force. While it's a bit heavy and doesn't have a lot of flex, it's a great board to get you up and riding at a low cost. It's a free option in our packages, so if you're looking for a budget-friendly way to get out on the water, this might be the board for you.

It's a fine board for beginners who are learning to kiteboard. It has an offset single concave on the bottom, which gives you a little more grip while riding. However, you will likely progress out of it by your second year, which is why we have a board upgrade option in our packages.

The longest-running board model in kiteboarding history – the Switch is the ultimate refined freeride machine. Designed for all-around fun riding, combining ease of use with forgiving and friendly handling, the Switch matches the needs of progressing kiters and those looking for a comfortable ride. With the new kiter in mind, the progressive single concave provides excellent comfort for a smooth and lively riding experience. Thin rails ensure a clean water release and offer sensationally low drag and easy upwind tracking.

PKG vs. Switch Weight (board only)

Weight can make a difference in upwind drive, jumping, and comfort on the water. You want to get the most time out of your sessions, and the less weight you have on your feet, the less quickly you will get fatigued. A lighter board is easier to maneuver as well. PKG 136cm - 7.5 lbs. 146cm - 9.1 lbs. Switch 135cm - 5.9 lbs. 145cm - 6.6 lbs.

Summary

Unless budget is a serious consideration, the Switch will likely be a worthwhile upgrade. You'll get a lot more use out of the Switch board because you won't outgrow it for a while, if ever, and once you do progress out of it, you'll be ready to move straight into a specialized board. You'll progress out of the PKG fast enough that you won't yet be ready for an advanced board and will still need to get an intermediate board like the Switch. Harness

A Waist/Seat harness combination is an affordable, supportive option for beginning kiteboarders. The seat portion of the harness is removable, making this option valuable and long-lasting.
